13/02/12: First snows of the winter!
We have had two significant falls of snow in the last week, the first of the winter. Apart from being such fun to be out in, snow also has a very profound impact on the landscape.
At this time of year, the landscape has very little colour in it; a collage of grays and browns and the boughs of the trees are bare, and their form skeletal. Then suddenly, overnight, we wake up to a transformed world. The drab, dirty world has gone, being replaced by a purifying blanket of snow. This pristine covering accentuates form, redefines distance, magnifies beauty and hides the imperfections of our old world. Suddenly, the subtle sense of burden can be lifted by a new vision for the world. A fall of snow can be a gateway to another world
